Male Fertility Preservation – Sperm Cryopreservation
A man's reproductive capacity develops from puberty onwards. It is at this time that sperm production begins and the ability to fertilize is acquired.
Therefore, a man's fertility is directly linked to his ability to produce sperm.
Sperm cryopreservation allows for the preservation of male fertility in various situations.
Indications:
- Cancer cases undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatments;
- Non-oncological disease cases that may affect fertility;
Prior to vasectomy, if the patient wishes to preserve their fertility;
- Expected absence at the time of ART treatment;
- Patients undergoing ART treatment with difficulty in collecting sperm;
- Severe male factor infertility, for preservation for future use in ART treatments;
- Patients with viral infection (HBV, HCV, HIV): it is necessary to wash and cryopreserve the sample to ensure a negative viral load;
- Transgender patients who wish to preserve their male gametes for future use;
- Patients without any associated pathology who wish to preserve their fertility for future use.
PROCEDURE:
Sperm cryopreservation involves blood tests (viral markers) and prior scheduling of the collection, ensuring 2 to 3 days of sexual abstinence.
On the day of collection, it should preferably be performed on the clinic premises through masturbation.
The sample is analyzed and processed in the laboratory, then cryopreserved in straws and stored in liquid nitrogen containers at -196°C.
The number of cryopreserved straws is determined according to the quality of the sample. In most cases, it will be advisable to perform at least two collections.
Like Egg Freezing, sperm cryopreservation also has no time limit, being initially maintained for a period of 5 years and successively renewable for further 5-year periods, provided that is the patient's wish.
At the time of use, the sample will be thawed in the laboratory and used according to the type of cycle most appropriate to your situation (IUI, IVF or ICSI).
