Semen Analysis

The first test usually requested when starting an infertility study is the semen analysis. Any abnormalities (if present) will determine the entire diagnostic and therapeutic strategy.

To perform this test, semen must be collected in a sterile container, preferably at the laboratory. If this is not possible, the sample must reach the laboratory within 30 minutes of ejaculation. Sexual abstinence of 2 to 3 days before collection is required.

Several semen parameters are evaluated: volume, sperm count, motility and morphology, among others.

The following table lists the reference values for some semen analysis parameters.
