WHAT IS INFERTILITY?
According to the World Health Organization, infertility is recognized as a public health problem, defined as the inability to obtain a pregnancy after 12 months of regular and unprotected sexual intercourse. Currently, it affects around 10 to 15% of couples of childbearing age, with an increasing trend according to age.
The causes of infertility are quite varied and can be present in both women and men. As such, a complete diagnosis and care of infertility is necessary, in order to identify the causes of this problem as well as the development of an appropriate treatment plan for each patient.
WHEN SHOULD THE STUDY BEGIN?
Usually only after 12 months of regular and unprotected sexual intercourse should the study begin. There are, however, some specific cases in which the study of infertility should begin earlier, ideally after 6 months:
Woman
• Age over 35 years old
• Absent or irregular periods
• Uterine anomalies
• Galactorrhea
• Obesity
• History of tube infection
• Endometriosis
Man
• Previous testicular injury
• Varicocele
Common
• Problems in sexual relations
• Previous history of infertility
