Human Reproduction in Numbers

During fetal life, the number of future eggs peaks at 7 million around 20 weeks of gestation, falling to 2 million by the time of birth.

During a woman's reproductive life, she ovulates an average of 400 times.

A young woman who has sex during her fertile period has a 20% chance of becoming pregnant in that cycle.

One in six couples has difficulty conceiving:

- 30% are due to female causes;

- 30% are due to male causes;

- 20% are due to mixed causes;

- 20% have no detectable cause.

Approximately 10-15% of clinical pregnancies result in spontaneous abortion.

The incidence of twins in the general population is 1%.

6 to 8% of fetuses are born prematurely.

The rate of fetal malformations in the general population is 3%.
