Sperm Donation

Fertilization occurs naturally from the union of the oocyte and the sperm. However, in certain circumstances, it may not be possible to obtain or resort to the male gamete.

Thanks to the voluntary and benevolent act of sperm donors, pregnancy is possible in situations that would otherwise be impossible.

Indications:

- Total absence of sperm (azoospermia);

- Surgical removal of the testicles;

- Serious situations of poor sperm quality;

- Risk of transmission of hereditary genetic disease;

- Women without a partner;

- Couples of women.

Procedure

Sperm donation can be used in IUI, IVF, and ICSI techniques, as well as in cycles with egg donation, which are then called double donation cycles.

Donor selection is based on the ethnicity, blood type, and phenotypic characteristics of the recipient woman or couple.

Legal Framework

Portuguese law mandates confidentiality. Recipients of the donation do not have access to any identifying information about the donor.

However, Law No. 48/2019, of July 8th, establishes that, from the age of 18, children born using donated gametes may obtain information about the donor's civil identity.

It is also important to note that gamete donors have no parental rights or obligations over children born from their donation; that is, donors can never be considered the parents of the child born.
