Inseminação Intrauterina (IIU)
In intrauterine insemination, ovulation can be induced in several ways, including:
- Oral medication, started between the 2nd and 5th day of the menstrual cycle, for 5 days;
- Daily injectable medication (gonadotropins), started between the 2nd and 3rd day of the menstrual cycle.
In some cases, it can also be performed in a natural cycle (without the use of medication).
This type of treatment involves carrying out some ultrasounds to monitor the increase in the size and number of follicles. The main objective is for a single follicle to develop and reach the appropriate diameter. At this point, another injectable hormone is administered to release the oocyte. Insemination is scheduled 36 hours after this injection.
On the day of insemination, the sperm sample is treated in the laboratory (sample coming from the male member of the infertile couple or from a donor). Laboratory treatment of collected sperm allows sperm with greater reproductive potential to be obtained, increasing the fertilization capacity of the oocyte. The sample is subsequently introduced into the uterine cavity, using a very thin catheter.
After this procedure and after resting for a few minutes, the woman can resume her normal life.
Indicações
Depending on the indications for performing the technique, IUI can be performed with partner or donor sperm.
IUI with partner’s sperm:
- Female element with ovulation changes;
- Male with mild or moderate changes in the spermogram;
- Infertility of unknown cause.
IUI with donor sperm: Heterosexual couples
- The male member of the couple does not have sperm in the ejaculate (azoospermia);
- Male element with high risk of transmitting a genetic disease to offspring (which cannot be studied in embryos).
IUI with donor sperm: Couples of women or women without a partner
