Recurso a Embriões Doados

This treatment consists of transferring cryopreserved embryos donated by a couple or a woman to another person(s) who are beneficiaries of assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment.

These embryos come from previously performed cycles in which the beneficiaries consented to their donation, in case they did not transfer them.

Embryo donation is voluntary, benevolent, and unpaid.

Indicações:

- When serious problems occur simultaneously with both oocytes and sperm;

- When previous cycles resulted in poor-quality embryos;

- When recurrent implantation failures occur;

- When there is low ovarian reserve or ovarian failure;

- When there is a risk of transmitting genetic diseases to offspring.

Procedimento

The procedure is similar to a cryopreserved embryo transfer (FET):

- Endometrial preparation

- Thawing of the embryo(s) to be transferred

- Embryo transfer: placement of a maximum of 2 embryos inside the uterus.

A pregnancy test detecting the beta-hCG hormone is performed 12 days after the transfer date.

Qual o contexto legal da doação de embriões?

Portuguese law mandates confidentiality. Donor recipients do not have access to any identifying information about the donor(s).

However, Law No. 48/2019, of July 8th, establishes that, from the age of 18, children born from donated embryos may obtain information about the civil identity of the donor(s).

It is also important to note that embryo donors have no parental rights or obligations over children born from their donation; that is, donors can never be considered the parents of the child born.
