Recurso a Doação de Ovócitos
Oocyte donation is a PMA treatment in which a woman (recipient) performs an in vitro fertilization cycle using oocytes that were donated by another woman (donor).
Donated oocytes are fertilized with the partner's sperm or, in the case of female couples or women without a partner, with donor sperm (double donation). Subsequently, an embryo is transferred to the uterus of the recipient woman and the remaining embryos (if any) are cryopreserved.
Donated oocytes represent a unique opportunity for some women who wish to fulfill their dream of becoming mothers.
Indicações:
- Women with low egg reserve;
- Women with poor egg quality;
- Women of advanced age;
- Women with ovarian failure due to menopause or premature ovarian failure (early menopause);
- Risk of transmission of hereditary genetic disease;
- Women with absence of ovaries.
Procedimento
The donor selection for each couple or beneficiary is based on aspects such as ethnicity, blood group and other phenotypic characteristics such as height, hair color and type, eye color, among others.
The selected donor begins a stimulation protocol to carry out an IVF cycle, followed by ovarian puncture.
Gametes (eggs and sperm) are processed in the laboratory, allowing their fertilization. The embryos obtained remain in culture for a few days, until the embryo is transferred to the recipient's uterus. The remaining good quality embryos, if any, are cryopreserved.
Alternatively, after ovarian puncture, the oocytes can be cryopreserved using the vitrification technique for future use. Subsequently, the oocytes are thawed and fertilized using the ICSI technique. The embryos obtained are kept in culture until transfer to the recipient's uterus.
After the transfer, the recipient resumes her normal life. Twelve days after the transfer, through a blood test, it is possible to know if you are pregnant, by measuring a hormone, hCG, the pregnancy hormone. Twenty-one days later, it is now possible to confirm the pregnancy by ultrasound, confirming the clinical pregnancy.
Enquadramento Legal
In Portugal, treatments using oocyte donation have been permitted since 2006. Portuguese legislation requires confidentiality. Donation beneficiaries do not have access to any information identifying the donor.
However, law no. 48/2019, of July 8, establishes that, from the age of 18, children born through gamete donation can obtain information about the donor's civil identity.
It is also important to note that gamete donors do not have any parental rights or obligations over children born from their donation, that is, donors can never be considered parents of the child that is born.
